Aulan

a magnificent seigniorial castle

Photo : Philippe Abel

A magnificent seigniorial castle with hospitable owners, reached by a particularly picturesque tiny road, the D. 159, that follows the lonely narrow valley.

The chapel is located at the foot of the castle. Priory Saint-Pierre d'Archaïs attached to the diocese of Gap in the 13th century, it became the church of Saint-Pierre.

Destroyed in 1599, she took the name of Marie-Madeleine in 1612.  Rebuilt in the 19th century, there would remain as roman only the apse. Among the fresco paintings, perhaps made by Italian painters in passing, are some sketches made by the Marquis de Gaudemaris, student and friend of Puvis de Chavannes.  A high altar in gilded wood, set in the 19th century, is the work of Mr Roux, living in Aulan and student of one of the great families of artisans from Mazan the Bernus.

Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Toulourenc valley, the castle (included in the inventory of Historic Monuments) has been, over time, modified several times.1635, Francois-Marie de Suarez marry Isabeau of Espine heiress of the Castle Aulan which she brought as a marriage portion to her husband. Today, it is still the property of their descendants, the Suarez d'Aulan.

Only private residence of the Baronnies remaining open to visitors, it contains many interesting and historical souvenirs, including since the Second Empire, from the Marquis of Aulan (1836-1915) squire of Napoleon III and member of the Drôme Parliament.
