Aurel

Beautiful village of Haute Provence, appreciated by painters

Aurel is opposite Baronnies and is the gate to the Sault.
Established on a hill, this medieval village, surrounded by mountains, overlooks, to the south, the Nesque valley where the river’s source is to be found.

Very beautiful Provencal village, appreciated by artists, potters and painters alike. René Seyssaud, who had a workshop in Aurel introduced the unique superb light and landscapes of Sault to his friend Pierre Ambrogiani. Seduced, he set up his workshop in Aurel in about 1950, then in Sault in 1961 and painted many works of art in Aurel and Sault, each painting an astonishing inferno of colours. Today it is a pottery workshop which attracts art lovers from far and wide.

The XIIth century parish church, dedicated to Saint Aurèle is a massive building of Romanesque origins with its two span nave.

Of the ruins of its XIIth century castle, only a square tower survived with its walls punctuated with holes.

The village is a pleasant maze of streets and steps, beautiful doors and porches constructed from Aurel stone, some arched in XVIIth century style, others with dated and ornamental arch stones.

Exhibitions of plastic arts and paintings in the season.
Fête votive Sunday the 3rd of July.
