The Albion Plateau - in Jean Giono's Country
|
A natural region set between le Mont Ventoux, la Montagne de Lure and les Monts de Vaucluse.
With wide spaces, typical High Provence villages, Romanesque churches and chapels, large farms with sheep-rearing and polyculture, the plateau offers rural scenery of great beauty of a sort that Jean GIONO describes and uses as the settings for several of his novels : "Jean le Bleu", "Regain", "Un de Baumugnes", "Que ma Joie Demeure", giving masterly portraits of strong personalities typical of the inhabitants of this plateau.
At LE CONTADOUR, a few kilometres from REVEST DU BION, in the 1930s Jean GIONO would hold his summer evening gatherings round the camp fire, surrounded by disciples, dreaming together beneath a pure serene starry sky, of a world at peace.
